There are more and more people starting to find ways to avoid food waste. The advantage is that we can reuse things that we may have previously been too quick to throw out, and now use things up completely, not wasting so much as a crumb… A great way to get value for money too! Here are 10 truly ingenious tips for how to reuse common food products.
1) Vegetable peel
The skin of vegetables is full of nutrients, and you can reuse it if your vegetables are organic (meaning the skin is not packed with pesticides). After a good wash, you can make tarts, use them to make a cheese bake, or even use them to make crisps (for example, by adding a few spices), cooking them at 180° after having coated them in olive oil.
However, note that by cooking them, they lose some of their nutritional value. If you would prefer not to do this, add them to your compost heap, or have another look at our article on how to recycle potato skins.
2) Lemon peel
Make the most of the anti-bacterial effects of lemons, which are also present in the skin, by using it to make a powerful non-toxic home cleaning product. Marinade the lemon peels in white vinegar for two weeks. Strain the mixture and add double the quantity of water (demineralised if possible). You can also add two dessertspoons of black soap per litre of this product and around a dozen drops of tea tree essential oil, to boost the efficiency of this cleaner, which is already extremely good for de-greasing and disinfecting.
And if you have some orange peel, you can make a great oven cleaner with this recipe.
3) A hollowed out vanilla pod
Even without its seeds, the shell of a vanilla pod has a beautiful scent and has beneficial properties for our health (it fights mental fatigue and stress, promotes digestion, and more). You can add it to a jar of white or brown sugar for an even more delicious flavour. Otherwise, you can use it to make an infusion, or add it to a hot drink such has hot chocolate or mulled wine. Finally, you can slip it into a bottle of body lotion or oil. Being an antioxidant, it will be very good for your skin.
