5 ways to use turmeric: a gold mine in terms of health

Turmeric is more than just a way to add flavour to your dishes. This traditional spice from ayurvedic medicine is still not well recognised by the general public for its health benefits. However, it can be used as much for its anti-inflammatory properties as for its ability to help combat a long list of problems, such as degenerative illnesses, diabetes or heart problems. These health benefits have been proven by numerous studies, especially the effect of this spice on malignant cancer cells. 

However, you don’t need to be a doctor or a researcher to take advantage of its antibacterial, anti-spasmodic, antiseptic, antifungal, anti-allergenic, anti viral and anti-inflammatory properties, to name but a few. You can incorporate it into your everyday diet to take care of your health. Here are a few ideas for how turmeric can be used in your daily life.

1) As a drink: turmeric kefir

Add a spoon of turmeric to a cup of kefir. All you have to do is drink it!

2) Lemon and turmeric juice

Mix a just over 1 cm of turmeric root (grated) -or 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder -with a 1/2 a teaspoon of sea salt and the juice of half a freshly sqeezed lemon. Mix it and it’s ready. 

3) A tasty soup

Simmer 4 cups of vegetable broth with some turmeric for 15 minutes. Add some chopped crab and black pepper, and leave it to simmer to make the turmeric more bioavailable (more readily absorbed and used by the body).

4) A warming tea

Boil a cup of hot water, add 1/2 a teaspoon of freshly grated turmeric and leave it to infuse for 5 minutes. Take it off the heat and add a pinch of black pepper and a dessertspoon of raw honey to improve the taste.

5) Two recipes for golden milk (turmeric tea)

The first is fast and simple: heat a glass of coconut milk until it is lukewarm and add a teaspoon of ground turmeric.

The second takes a little longer: Mix the following ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric or freshly grated turmeric root
  • 2 teaspoons of raw honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger
  • 1 cup of coconut milk or almond milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla
  • A pinch of ground cloves
  • 60 mls water
  • A pinch of cardamom
