6 very simple tips to avoid getting sick in the cold weather

We are never truly done with the cold weather in the UK, although it is particularly biting in winter time, when colds and flus seem to become an inevitable part of daily life for us. In fact, the body is most vulnerable to illness during this period. However, you can counteract the negative effects of the colder months, by trying out a few simple tips, to help you avoid catching cold. 

1) Don’t stay wrapped up inside

We know how tempting it is to stay cosy inside at the fire, and of course good rest and sleep is important for supporting our immune system and giving us energy. But it is also important to regularly take some fresh air, in spite of the cold (avoiding pollutants such as exhaust pipes). You could go for a walk in a forest or in a local park. Remember also to air your home well every day, which prevents bacteria, pollutants and toxic gases from building up. By looking after your airways, they will be less fragile and microbes will find it harder to stick to them.

2) Get as much sunshine as possible

Bacteria does not get on well with UV rays, and vitamin D gives a great boost of moral as well as supporting immunity. Any time the sun shines, make the most of it by going for a walk or doing some outdoor sports. What’s more, exercise stimulates our defences and promotes the production of white blood cells, all the while making the respiratory system more resistant. Exercise helps you replace emotional fatigue with physical fatigue, which can be fixed quite easily with a little rest! And this helps overcome stress, which can significantly weaken the system.

3) Eat healthily, and ideally eat foods that are in season

As well as being better for the environment, eating seasonal foods is better for your intestines too! Your body has evolved over the millennia to adapt to the changes in season. Eat accordingly!

Remember to get enough vitamins and minerals, because these are what strengthen the organism and make it more resistant to illness. Go for foods that are rich in vitamin A (carrots, spinach, etc.) or vitamin C (citrus fruits, yellow peppers, etc.) and  keep healthy seeds in your cupboards for magnesium. Avoid processed foods which offer no nutrition, and take advantage of the array of seasonal vegetables to make tasty soups.
