If you are often wide awake for most of the night, never being able to get a wink of sleep (although you’ve tried lying in every possible position), or if you frequently wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep again, you are likely to spend the next day in a zombified state, with your body and mind completely sleep deprived. In this article, while we don’t have any miracle solutions, we have a number of effective natural remedies for promoting good quality sleep, especially when stress is the source of the problem. Of course, these remedies will do little good unless they are accompanied by certain healthy sleep habits. 

1) Orange blossom to calm your nerves

Ingredients:

  • 2 g of orange blossoms
  • 250 mls water
  • 5 g of sugar

Method:

1) Bring the water and the orange blossoms to the boil and leave the mixture to infuse for five minutes.

2) Take it off the heat and leave it to sit for another 5 minutes.

3) Strain the mixture and add the sugar.

4) Drink it 30 minutes before going to bed.

2) Calming mint tea for combating stress

Ingredients:

  • 5 g of fresh green mint
  • 250 mls water
  • Optional: sugar or honey to sweeten the taste (to be added before drinking)

Method:

1) Bring the water to the boil. Once it is ready, add the mint and allow it to infuse for 5 minutes.

2) Take it off the heat. Cover it and wait a few minutes for the mixture to cool down.

3) Strain it and drink it 30 minutes before going to sleep.

3) Valerian infusion for combating major stress and anxiety

Ingredients

  • 10 g of fresh valerian
  • 250 mls of water
  • 25 g of honey

Method:

1) Boil the water and the valerian for around ten minutes.

2) Turn the heat off and cover the infusion for 5 minutes.

3) Strain it and add the honey for a pleasant, sweet flavour.

4) Drink it before going to sleep.

4) Chamomile and sage tea for any sleep problems

Ingredients:

  • 10 g of chamomile flowers
  • 10 g of sage
  • 250 mls water
  • 25 g of honey

Method:

1) Heat the water. Once it is boiling, add the chamomile and sage.

2) Leave it on the boil for 7 minutes before removing it from the heat and leaving it to stand for around ten minutes.

3) Strain it and add the honey to sweeten it.

4) Drink it a quarter of an hour before bedtime.
