There is nothing worse than hair that smells bad, especially if it is long (and when you get a whiff of it at the slightest puff of wind), and when you go to hug friends or family. The characteristic odour of sebum is not terribly glamorous, and can give a negative impression of that person’s personal hygiene.
Of course, washing your hair is one way of ensuring hair doesn’t smell bad, but when you don’t have time to wash it every day, how can you avoid unpleasant odours? Here are 5 of our top tips for you.
1) Tomato juice
It’s a classic in salads, and for treating spots, but we know less about how tomatoes can be good for our hair! With all the good they contain, there is nothing like tomatoes for damaged or dull hair, as well as for dandruff. What’s more, tomatoes leave a sweet and long-lasting fragrance. Apply fresh tomato juice to your hair after shampooing and leave it to work for 30 minutes. Repeated twice a week, this treatment will give you soft, beautiful hair that stays smelling fresh for a long time.
2) Aloe vera
Its pH is adapted to the skin and it can make a big difference in terms of hair that falls out, promoting hair growth and preventing excess sebum and odours. And all while hydrating your hair, making it more shiny and guaranteeing a pleasant fragrance! Apply the gel to your hair before shampooing and leave it to work for a quarter of an hour. Rinse with lukewarm water with a gentle conditioner.
3) Essential oils
We adore their scents and when applied to the hair, they leave a divine fragrance. By choosing the right one, you can treat your hair with what it needs. You simply need a little know-how. You can add a few drops to your shampoo or massage your scalp with one drop of essential oil per one spoon of base oil (grape seed oil, sweet almond oil, extra virgin olive oil, etc.).
A few examples:
For dry hair: sandalwood, lavender, geranium, ylang-ylang.
Oily hair: grapefruit, cypress, cedar, lemon-grass, lemon, lavender.
Dandruff: sandalwood, bergamot, lavender, rosemary, patchouli.
Hair that falls out: lemon, geranium, ginger.
Dull, brittle or damaged hair: ylang-ylang, chamomille, lemon-grass, lavender, sandalwood, geranium, lemon.
Yes, you have read correctly! Vodka has a low pH and contains active ingredients that can tame your hair, hydrate the scalp and prevent dandruff. As well as stimulating hair growth, vodka gives your hair an improved odour. Mix one cup of vodka with rosemary and allow it to sit for a few hours, or mix one spoon of vodka with 250 mls of water. Apply your chosen mixture to your hair before shampooing and allow it to work for 10 minutes. Repeat once a week.
5) Apple cider vinegar
It balances your hair’s pH, stimulates hair growth, fights against dandruff, shines your hair and gives it a pleasant odour. Make a mixture from two spoons of cider vinegar and 250 mls of water. Apply this to your scalp, massaging it in gently. Leave it to work for a few minutes and rinse with water. Don’t apply anything afterwards.
