It could happen to anyone: you get home after a long day of work, dreaming of nothing but slumping on the couch and unwinding in front of the fire. Except that it seems you don’t know your own strength and your enthusiasm when opening the door has gotten the key stuck in the lock. Not only that, but you have broken the head off the key, leaving you with no idea how you’ll ever get it out again. Here is how to solve this frustrating problem.

1) Buy a tube of glue in the nearest shop (if it’s 2 o’clock in the morning, there may not be much you can do).

2) Put a drop of glue on the end of the key that you have.

3) Promptly stick the head of the key to the piece that is stuck in the lock, and wait a minute for the glue to dry, thus making the key whole again. (Be careful not to allow the glue to run into the lock, as this could cause irreversible damage).

4) And pull the key! It should pop out like new, without needing to call a locksmith.

You can also try levering the end of the key out from the lock with a needle, and grabbing and pulling it with a tweezers.

How to prevent this from happening again in the future?

Put some oil in a sticky lock to prevent problems with opening it.
