Periods can be a source of pain and discomfort for many reasons. And when the reason is that they are very heavy, we tend to get fed up, and can even worry about it. Some women can be led to believe that they won’t have a drop of blood left in their bodies (which of course is not true!) A gynaecologist can give you some pointers on understanding that a heavy flow can be caused by several phenomena (contraception, diet, stress, etc.).

This problem can be difficult to treat, but surprisingly, some of your best allies in this case are none other than nettles, which can be used to gradually reduce blood loss. They help regulate the menstrual cycle without having any harmful effects on your hormones. They also provide a healthy dose of iron (which you need to prevent anaemia), vitamins A, B, and C and other minerals. Gather a wild plant and prepare the nettles by cooking them, or by crushing them after having left them to sit for half a day. By adopting some of the good habits outlined in this article, you should see improvements in the long term.

1) A soothing nettle tea

Boil 200 mls of water. Once the water is boiling, take it off the heat and add 10 grams of fresh or dried nettles. Cover the container and leave it to infuse for 10 minutes. It is then ready to drink. If you feel the need to sweeten it, avoid white sugar and add a little honey or stevia instead.

Take this tea morning and evening over a period of 3 to 6 months.

2) Nettle drink

You can consume nettles in a juice or a smoothie. Pop a handful into a smoothie maker or juicer with other ingredients (cacao, apple, pear, banana, red berries, etc., or make a savoury smoothie with celery, spinach, etc.). You can make it smoother and easier to drink by adding water or a vegetable milk.

We recommend taking this drink daily for a minimum of two months.

3) Classic nettle soup

There’s nothing like a soup or a broth in cold weather to heat up your insides. And if your soup has additional health benefits, all the better! Add a handful of nettle leaves to some choice vegetables to bring out their flavour: onions, celery, potatoes, carrots, etc. Blend it well and enjoy.

However, there are no miracle cures, and dedication is required. Have this soup as a starter every day for several months.

4) The simple solution: tablets or liquid extracts

Organic food supplements that you will find in the health store or specialist shops will allow you to consume nettles without having to follow a restrictive nettle based diet. You simply need to follow the recommended doses on the bottle.
